The Chief Justice of Nigeria, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Tanko Muhammad, on Friday 13th December 2019 swore in Hon. Justice Benedict Kanyip as the substantive President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.
The swearing-in was sequel to the confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Tuesday 5th November 2019 following the recommendation by the President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Tanko Muhammed urged Justice Kanyip and his Counterpart, Justice John Tsoho the newly Chief Judge of the Federal High court to know their onions and always abide by the rule of law and the Judicial code of conduct.
“Both of you are not new in the system; you know the rules of the service. I don’t think it should be iterated for you. Repeatedly, respect yourself; respect your office and don’t allow anybody to distract you.†Justice Tanko advised.
The new President of the Court, Hon. Justice Benedict Kanyip hails from Anturung-Attakar in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, North-West Nigeria.
His Lordship studied Law at the ‘University of First Choice’ Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Kaduna, North-West Nigeria.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Justice Kanyip lectured at the same Ahmadu Bello University and rose to the position of Lecturer II before leaving in 1992 for the National Commission for Colleges of Education as Legal Adviser in the rank of Principal Legal Officer.
In 1995, he was appointed as a Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and rose to the rank of Associate Research Professor of Law in the year 2000.
The National Industrial Court has exclusive jurisdiction on civil causes and matters relating to or connected with any labour, employment, trade unions, industrial relations and matters arising from workplace, the conditions of service, including health, safety, welfare of labour, employee, worker and matters incidental thereto or connected therewith;
Relating to, connected with or arising from Factories Act, Trade Disputes Act, Trade Unions Act, Labour Act, Employees' Compensation Act or any other Act or Law relating to labour, employment, Industrial relations, workplace or any other enactment replacing the Acts or Laws; etc
