[JUST IN] Substantive President: Senate Screens Justice Kanyip

The Acting President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, His Lordship, Hon. Justice Benedict Kanyip and the acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice John Tsoho appeared before the Senate today Monday 4th November 2019 for screening.


The Chairman Senate committee on judiciary, human rights and legal matters; Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele used that avenue to stress the need for Judiciary independence.


He also expressed the readiness of the Senate to partner with other arms of government for deepening of democracy while promised that the report would be submitted at the floor of the Senate tomorrow Tuesday 5th November 2019.

Recently, President Muhammadu Buhari, following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), forwarded the name of Justice Kanyip to the senate for confirmation as substantive president of the National Industrial Court.


In 1995, Justice Kanyip was appointed Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and rose through the appointment to the rank of Associate Research Professor of Law in the year 2000.


Justice Kanyip is the author of numerous scholarly articles in the areas of consumer law, labour law, tax law and commercial law.


And also the author of the book ‘Consumer Protection in Nigeria: Law, Theory and Policy’ (2005), and a joint author of the text 'Elements of Commercial Law' (1994) among many others.
