Quintessentially, many scholars are of the opinion that there is no profession anywhere in the world that is so dependent on books like the legal profession because it requires a lot of legal information assemblage as well as the citing or gathering of so many bodies of knowledge and evidences requirement for the successes of any legal matters.
Consequent on the above, the Nigerian Association of law libraries Under the leadership of Ibrahim Babah Gasau CLN, mni organized her 43rd Annual Conference and General Meeting on “The Law Library as a change agent in Nigerian Libraries” at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Ibadan Judicial division.
The conference was declared open by the Hon. Chief Judge, Oyo State, Honourable Justice Muntar Abimbola on the Sunday 2nd September 2018.
The association comprises of all librarian staff in the judiciary as a whole.
“We are in the age that people do not want to waste time in achieving anything anymore and for that reason man has devised every shortest means possible in achieving his/her objectives without delays.
“Currently the whole world is conversing and working towards speedy dispensation of Justice and time is of essence as far as speedy justice administration is concern looking from the point of view of Deborah K. Hackerson, (2010) who have rightly observed that “Access to Justice Starts in the Library” even as other scholars identified “too much work load” on Hon. Judges as the major factor responsible for the delays in the dispensation of Justice.”
These were the expression used by NICN deputy director Library services, Ibrahim Safana during his paper presentation on “The Law Librarian as a Facilitator of Information for Legal Practitioners.”
He charged his colleagues to become more proactive in easing access to the day-to-today information needs of the Honorable Judges to avoid delay in the dispensation of justice and to improving the judge’s ability to effectively administer justice.
Mr. Safana strongly posited that Law Library need to be very smart and be on top of their game if they must remain on top at this emerging world of information communication technology. He also expressed lack of training in digital literacy on how to use ICTs and other technologies were barriers facing library development.
The conference will end on Friday 7th September, 2018 with a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji.
