For many judges, judicial performance evaluation is fearsome prospect, one hell bent on undermining judicial independence and centuries of legal tradition. Others take a more liberal view and see the potential for performance evaluation as a useful tool for professional self-development. These contrasting views are based on different perceptions of what the concept of judicial performance evaluation may involve.
Consequent upon the above, it is commendable that the National Judicial Institute has considered it necessary to put together a forum like this where issues bothering on performance evaluation of Judicial Officers and Kadis could be discussed, analysed and dissected. This, indeed, will lead to better appreciation and understanding of the essence of strengthening justice through performance evaluation.
The sole purpose of an educational forum such as this is to clear grey areas and illuminate understanding on the critical role of the NJC in evaluation the performance of Judicial Officers so that there will be no misgivings.
Sequel to this, His Lordship, Hon. Justice B. A. Adejumo, OFR, President, National Industrial Court of Nigeria, was the guest speaker at the 2018 National Judicial Council Induction course for Judges and kadis holding at Andrews Otutu Obaseki Auditorium, Abuja
His Lordship spoke today Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018 on “Strengthening Justice Through Judicial Performance Evaluation” chaired by Hon. Justice Amina Augie, CON, Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
While delivering lecture, His Lordship enjoined the judges and kadis to make use of this paper as a reference guide to get over the saying that the fear of the committee is the beginning of wisdom. “The beginning of wisdom is to sit down, discharge your duties diligently, promptly, constitutionally, fairly, judiciously and equitably. Remember where there is no law, there is no sin.” Says Justice Adejumo.
The chairman of the session, His Lorship, Hon. Justice Amina Augie also charged the participants to be more committed to their judicial career.
His Lordship, Justice Adejumo further expressed appreciation to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Chairman Board of Governors of the institute, Hon. Justice WSN Onnoghen, GCON; the administrator of NJI, Hon. Justice R. P. I. Bozimo OFR (rtd); Justices of Supreme court present, Justices of court of Appeal here present and all participants for the opportunity to present this paper and for their listening.
The session was well attended by many judges and kadis across the federation, among whom were Judges of National Industrial Court of Nigeria.
