The Hon. President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Benedict Kanyip, PhD, OFR has urged legal practitioners to get themselves equipped with labour Laws and International Labour Organization conventions for better understanding of the speciality of the Court.
Justice Kanyip gave the advise at this year’s Gabriel Adikwu & Co. Annual Lecture in honour of His Lordship Hon Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, JSC Rtd and Commissioner, Police Service Commission, held on Saturday at the Government House Banquet Hall located at Dougirei Yola, Adamawa State.
Speaking on “Promoting and enhancing Labour Justice: Role of Lawyers.” Justice Kanyip harped on the need to explore out-of-court settlements as the best option for resolving labour disputes to promote and enhance labour justice in Nigeria.
The Gabriel Adikwu Annual Lecture is reputed as perhaps the largest gathering of jurists and justice sector stakeholders in the North East. The Annual Lecture has expanded beyond the shores of Adamawa State to include jurists across the North-Eastern States and the Federation.
In his remark, Justice Ita Mbaba who delivered a lecture on “The Court as the Last Hope of the Common Man: Current Realities and Concerns.” emphasized the need for judges to know that they are ‘deputizing’ for God in the affairs of men, adding that once they realize that they are being watched by God, such consciousness will make them to be bold, careful and to apply godly virtues in their judgements.
Delivering his Keynote Speech, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN highlighted that the experience of lawyers and the law in Nigeria's democratic dispensation from 1999 to 2023 has been both challenging and enlightening, and the Lessons learned underscore the importance of an independent judiciary and the role of lawyers in advancing human rights.
Afam SAN stressed that significant challenges, such as corruption and limited access to justice, persist. However, he stated that despite all these, there are opportunities for lawyers to contribute to positive change through active engagement in the ongoing constitutional reform process and embracing technological advancements in fostering a just and democratic society.
In attendance were Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN; retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice P. A. Galumje; Justice Ita Mbaba OFR, formerly of the Court of Appeal; Chief Judge of Adamawa State High Court, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman; Adamawa State Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice, Mr A. K. Jingi; Presiding Judge, National Industrial Court Yola Division, Hon. Justice James Agbadu-Fishim, Judges of the Industrial Court as well as Royal Father of the Day and retired Chief Judge of Adamawa State; Hon. Justice N. Musa (Wakilin Alkalai Adamawa) amongst other notable guests.
The awards of merit were presented to deserving speakers and guests for their indubitable contributions to the development of Justice in Nigeria.
