Hon. Justice Oyebiola Oyewumi of the Abuja Judicial Division of the National Industrial Court has expressed that the Court has moved away from the conservative ways of adjudication, urged the entire members of the bar and the judiciary to key into the technological innovation deployed by the court to ease the judicial process.
Justice Oyewumi stated this at the Day 3 of the plenary session of the Nigerian Bar Association, Section on Legal Practice, Annual Conference while giving a remark as a panellist on Law Practice in the Digital Age: Balancing Professional Responsibility And Technological Innovation.
Justice Oyewumi elucidated on the giant stride made by the court during the Covid-19 era and post-Covid-19 era and the consistency of the technological innovation deployed by the Court that serves as a trailblazer in the dispensation of justice.
His Lordship boasted that the increasing use of virtual court sittings across several divisions by the court has provided easy and alternative means of a timely and effective adjudication system.
Justice Oyewumi further explained that the service of Electronic Hearing Notice and adjournment via counsel’s and litigant's email addresses and phone numbers has provided a convenient and efficient way for users to receive notifications about upcoming hearings related to their cases, and reduced the risk of missed hearings or important deadlines.
Justice Oyewumi also expressed that not only that the court has the updated digitalized judgment portal where counsel gets the opportunity to read judgements from the comfort of their zones but can also make further research in enriching their knowledge base on labour jurisprudence, and the provisions contained in the NICN Rules 2017 are in line with the best global practices.
His Lordship stressed that the technological innovation deployed by the Court has helped her adjudicate several cases online virtually from start to finish.
In his part, the Executive Director, The Legal Concierge, Mr. Inemesit Dike stated that technology is here to stay and implored lawyers to take advantage of ICT to be able to succeed in their profession. The event was well attended by Judges, Senior Advocates, Lawyers, Law Students and the general public.
Other members of the panelists were Hon. Justice Peter Akhihiero, Judge of the High Court of Edo State, Mena Ajakpovi- Partner, Udo Udoma and Bello Osagie; Mr. Emmanuel Edet-Head of Legal, NITDA, Inemesit Dike-The Executive Director, The Legal Concierge and Mr. Idris Mohammed, MD- Fama firm.
Other judges from the Industrial Court in attendance were Hon. Justice Muhammad Hamza and Hon. Justice Hassan Yakubu.
