The court has exclusive jurisdiction in civil causes and matters relating to or connected with any labour, employment, trade unions, industrial relations and matters arising from workplace, the conditions of service, including health, safety, welfare of labour, employee, worker and matter incidental thereto or connected therewith.

Hon. Justice M. N. Esowe

Honorable Justice Maureen Nkechinyereugo Esowe was appointed a Judge of the National Industrial Court in 2008. She trained as a lawyer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and as a Legal Practitioner at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, Nigeria.

Justice Esowe has at various times in her 26 year career as a lawyer been a Senior State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice, Umuahia, Abia State; a Senior Magistrate 11; a Senior Magistrate I; Chief Magistrate, Grade I; a Deputy Chief Registrar and later Chief Registrar of the High Court of Justice, Abia State Judiciary, Umuahia, Abia State. Justice Esowe also served as Presiding Magistrate, Environmental Sanitation Court, Abia State between 1994 and 1996; President, Marine Board of Investigation into marine accidents involving MT TABOTI, MT BARO, MT REAL PROGRESS, MT MARINE BAY, MT YANNIS and MT CAMKOLE.

She has previously been an active member of the Nigerian Bar Association and the Magistrates Association of Nigeria.

Justice Esowe was on a study tour to the United States of America in August 2009 and South Africa in May 2010 to acquaint herself with the workings of the Labour Courts in those countries.
